Poem

Today in class we read a beautiful poem by a woman named Joy Harjo. It was called Eagle Poem. It's about connecting with nature, and I really loved it. It is one of those poems that just speaks it's meaning loudly and clearly to me. Of course almost everyone in the class, teacher included, felt the need to poke fun at it for being so "hippyish".

Eagle Poem

To pray you open your whole self
To sky, to earth, to sun, to moon
To one whole voice that is you.
And know there is more
That you can't see, can't hear
Can't know except in moments
Steadily growing, and in languages
That aren't always sound but other
Circles of motion.
Like eagle that Sunday morning
Over Salt River.
Circles in blue sky
In wind, swept our hearts clean
With sacred wings.
We see you, see ourselves and know
That we must take the utmost care
And kindness in all things.
Breathe in, knowing we are made of
All this, and breathe, knowing
We are truly blessed because we
Were born, and die soon, within a
True circle of motion,
Like eagle rounding out the morning
Inside us.
We pray that it will be done
In beauty.
In beauty.

  1. Oh I love Joy Harjo

She is way cool too, not at all hippie-ish (tho what is wrong with hippies anyways).

This is a woman who met the moon at a bar near the corner of 5th and Kiowa aves (I may have the corner wrong, but not the idea)

  2. I know eagles, I think they would love this poem. The movement of the words is similar to their flight. Wonderful.

  3. I love the phrase:
"...in languages that aren't always sound but other circles of motion."

That jumped out to me--so true, isn't? I'd never heard of Joy Harjo, thank you for sharing!
