Stuff To Do Before College

In the car on the way home yesterday I was making my 'to do' list of everything I need to do before leaving for college.

Get my computer back from Poppa once it's fixed (I need it for school!)

Get my car registered and inspected ASAP

Buy all the books and supplies I'll need for school

Make and freeze meals so my mom, dad, and Tia don't have to resort to frozen pizza & takeout while I'm gone (suggestions on what meals freeze and reheat well would be appreciated!)

Clean the house really well

Vacuum my car out (the previous owner hauled hay in it)

Pack my stuff

Babysit Keagan (I haven't seen him in weeks! I miss him...)

Print pictures to bring to college with me

Get a potted plant for my dorm room (I'll be in a city, want some nature with me)

Make Great Gram's relish

Contact NECI admissions about my questions

Hang out with my friends as much as possible

Orientation is the 3rd of September. I'm flip flopping back and forth between excitement and being so scared I want to throw up. Is college supposed to be like that?

  1. Yes, college is supposed to be like that. I felt exactly the same. Just remember that everyone is in exactly the same boat as you. The first few weeks of college are like being trapped in a bubble where normal social rules don't apply: it is perfectly acceptable to walk up and introduce yourself to a random stranger for no reason, and they will be grateful for it. You will meet so many new people you won't be able to remember all their names, and many of them you will end up walking past without even saying hi. But you will also be surprised at who ends up being one of your best friends.

The pictures and potted plants are a really good idea. Your college room has to be a home from home and express your personality, so decorate it as much as possible! And yes, see your friends as much as possible before you go. But you're not too far from home (you're about the same distance as me, I believe), so it won't be hard to come back every few weekends and see them all and your family!

  2. Oh yeah - you're right on!
As soon as you settle in, the butterflies will be gone and you'll feel like it's always been your home.
Yay for you! This is the most exciting time of your life!
I agree with everything Emma said -a very wise piece of advice.

Shepherds Pie freezes well and is easy to make. Meatballs too. Just roll them, cook them and freeze them. They can be added later to a any kind of sauce.

Seriously Tori, I am so excited for you! It's true - this is the best time of your life!... relax, enjoy, and get as much as you can out of these next few years!!

  3. Aww I am so excited for you! I went to college after kids so I can't say I know what your going through. But I wish you the best of luck on this new journey.

Meals to freeze: lasagnas do very well. Also any type of casserole will freeze nicely. Even taco meats will do.

  5. Thanks for the advice and suggestions! I'm glad the excitement mixed with fear is normal.

School is about 2 hours away from home. Close enough for me to come home on days off!

  7. Foods that freeze well: Meatloaf, taco meat (and you can make a ton of different things with it!), lasagna, muffins, chili, enchiladas, shepherd's pie, mashed potatoes, soups, stew, cooked chicken breasts.

There are also some great pre-made things that you can stick in the freezer that are easy to warm up and eat, without being "junk food" - fresh pastas, gnoccchi, veggie burgers.

You might stock up on healthy cereals, too! Better a bowl of raisin bran for lunch that a big mac, lol!

You are so, so sweet to be thinking to make sure your family is taken care of this way while you are off to college! They are lucky to have you :O)
