This morning I read two blog posts that inspired me. I rushed to work and forgot all about them, but then I came home and re-read them and was re-inspired by their awesomeness. The two posts are Brandi's Monday Mission, and Jamie's post about not being afraid to have your own style. I'm sitting here now trying to figure out if they can be connected in any way, but that's just that part of my brain talking. The part that needs to analyze everything and find connections. Instead of listening to that part of my brain I'm going to continue writing about why these posts inspired me so much!
First Brandi's doing it imperfectly. Could this have posted at any better time? I don't think so. I've got all these creative ideas flowing through my head, even as I type. The problem is I would most likely start them, and quickly decide I'm not doing it 'right'. This is why I stop doing so many things I love doing. Writing for one example. I criticize myself, and I can be brutal, so I just stop doing whatever it is. Well I'm going to write this quote down somewhere so I can see it next time I think of stopping in the middle of a project. "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Julia Cameron
Now Jamie's fearless fashion sense. Fashion scares me. Where I live it's all jeans and t-shirts. There are exceptions, but the majority of people (all ages)wear jeans and t-shirts. That's what I wear, it's what I'm used to. And in my family we all wince at the thought of spending a lot of money on our clothes. Just looking at the price tags on the nicer clothes makes me want to die. $20 for a shirt? $50 for pants?! How can anyone spend that much? I guess I do have that negative view of fashion that Jamie talks about.
Anyway, for school in September I need to have white button up shirts and black dress pants. When I first realized this I had no clue what I was going to do. I still don't. I hate walking into stores where they sell these kinds of clothes. I feel so out of place. I own a few shirts now, but I'm stumped on the pants. I'm going to the mall this weekend, so I guess I'll look there. I also want to update my wardrobe. I've never really gone clothes shopping at the mall before, so this will definitely be interesting! I'll be wincing the entire time, but I swear I'm going to actually buy some nice clothes! Maybe I'll ask my cousin to come with us, she'll defend me when my mom tries to make me buy clothes I know I'll never wear.
Thank you Brandi and Jamie! This is why I love blogging, I know I'll always be inspired daily by wonderful people.

Receiving Compliments
I heard something today that I truly appreciate hearing. It reaffirms what I've been thinking the last few days which is "I really like who I am." 7th period I have a study hall, so I go and sit in my English teacher's room and do homework while he prepares for the next day. We talked for a little bit, and then I sit and do my French homework. Out of no where he just says "Tori, I hope you know that you're really neat." I have a confused look on my face, so he goes on to say "Not neat as in organized, you're a really cool person." He keeps explaining it to me. He tells me that I'm "unique and smart and creative. Kind and caring. Above and beyond most of my classmates." That I "might not have a better GPA than all of them, but they don't have the inquisitive mind that I have." He tells me that he was surprised when I chose to go into restaurant management, because I'd be a good scholar. I explained to him why I chose management. I would love a liberal arts college. I'd flourish and have fun. But I would never want to declare a major or leave.
We talked for a while. He told me he wanted me to know those things, not so I can brag, but so I can be more confident about myself. Well it worked. It makes you feel good to hear someone you respect tell you all the good they see in you.
I just realized that this goes right along with this weeks Joy Rebel Mission, which is about receiving. I've never been a very good compliment receiver, but I'm glad I could accept these ones today. It feels pretty good.
By the way, I had a lot of fun at prom on Saturday! I haven't posted anything about it because I'm still trying to hunt down decent pictures to share. When you're the one with a camera you don't get many of yourself. I think my mom has some of me before we left for prom, and there's always friends on facebook with pictures. I'll get them soon.

My 10 Joy Rebel Commandments
I've got my 10 Joy Rebel Commandments to share with you all!
1- It's all about the journey.
This one was inspired by Boho Mom. I think it's something to keep in mind no matter what walk of life you are in. Getting there is half the fun, right?
2- Be creative!
If it feels right- do it! Dance, sing, write, draw, whatever. Just express yourself.
3- Get outside in nature.
The best way to enjoy and appreciate the gifts nature has to offer is outdoors.
4- Take time to pause.
You can't appreciate life if you're always on the go.
5- Learn as much as possible and take the lesson from a situaton no matter the outcome.
6- Smile and laugh!
The say that laughter is the best medicine, and that a good mood is contagious.
7- Care for others and yourself.
It is possible. Both are necessary.
8- Give Free Hugs.
It feels good.
9- See the magic in it all.
Life is full of magic. Don't let it disappear from the world.
10- "To thine own self be true!"
A quote right out of Hamlet. If you can't be true to yourself, what's the point in being?

Sharing Smiles and Laughs
First- I was wrong about the title of my post yesterday. I'm not finding myself, I'm creating myself. I didn't think of it until after, but that's from one of my favorite quotes. "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." - George Bernard Shaw. It's as true as can be in my mind.
I want to share some cool things with you all. A couple of things that just make me smile.

I made cookies for my mom to bring to work one day a while ago. As a thank you, her boss brought me back some cool stuff from Mexico where he went scuba diving. Shells and sand, and a shot glass.

I don't know how, but I convinced my parents to let me get some flowers from the grocery store when we went shopping on Friday. Aren't they pretty? I was wanting some all winter long, they brighten up the house and smell SO nice.
This week's Joy Rebel Mission was to laugh. So I immediately looked up a comedian that I have been meaning to listen to again. Rodney Carrington is hilarious! The Chicken Song is one of his best ones.

Boho Mom passed this award on to me. Thank you!
Here are the rules:
Copy & paste this award to your blog.
List 7 of your favorite things and pass it along to at least 7 others
Okay!
1- Blogging. I just mentioned this yesterday actually. Blogging has become one of my favorite things to do. It gives me a connection that I haven't found anywhere else.
2- Journaling. Once I started journaling last night I couldn't stop. It is just a helpful thing. I can be more honest when I'm journaling for myself than at any other time.
3- Watching chick flicks with my sister. When Tia and I watch movies together it's a form of connecting. We're both old enough now where I can sense a real close relationship forming. I think I'm going to miss just sitting watching TV with her more than anything when I leave for college.
4- Laughing! Who doesn't love laughing, though? It makes me feel better.
5- Playing with Keagan. Keagan is the 2 1/2-year-old I babysit. He's the cutest kid in the world, smart as heck, and FUN! I sleep so well the days I watch him. His parents are family friends so at least it's not weird when I go over and ask if I can watch him. We all start to miss him if we don't see him every other week.
6- Just going and hanging out at my Aunt Jen's house. Her house is the kind of place where people randomly show up. My mom's side of the family is huge, and very close. I love to just be around them. They bring out the best in me. There is always jokes, laughter, food, and probably someone getting tackled to the ground when we get together.
7- Learning. It's so important to me. If I could afford it I'd just go and take every interesting college course out there. I can't, though. xP So I'm going to a school where I know I'll have a job when I'm done.
I pass this one on to all of you!

Joy Isn't Optional
This week's Joy Rebel Mission was to create your own superhero. I had fun with this! It's just an awesome way to act like a kid. Mine is below. I wanted to keep her simple, but I'm definitely going to make another one just for the fun of it.

It wasn't quite as rainy today. I still haven't gotten around to taking pictures of the flowers outside. My sister has, but I have no clue where her camera is right now.
One year ago today my Grandpa Ben passed away. It's sad to think about how much has changed since then. We have a totally different relationship with my Grandma Ben now. It was a long and painful estrangement, and now it's very stressful to deal with that entire side of my family anymore.
It was such a sad time for us all to have him gone. My friends really pulled through for me, though. They helped me a lot. I'll always remember that. I still have the card my NHS group sent me, signed by them all wishing me well. Looking back, it's nice just to know that somebody cared.
I didn't really want to cry today, but looking at that card always does it. I'm going to feel sad for a little while, but I can't let it linger too long. For me joy isn't optional. I'm going to make sure it's there at least in some little way every day of my life. What would be the point of living a life without joy in it?

Joy Rebel!
This weeks Joy Rebel Mission is to look back on our blogs a year ago. The idea is to acknowledge our growth and affirm what we would like for our future. I didn't have a blog this time last year, but I was doing things.
Last March I was...
Getting excited about my Junior Prom that I had in May
Keeping deadlines for the yearbook
Thinking seriously about what my senior year would be like
Looking forward to seeing my cousin graduate in June
Worrying about my license
Really, really, wanting summer to come
Becoming more aware of my path
Trying not to worry about what it will be like in college
This March I am...
Excited for my Senior Prom which will be in May
Filling out scholarships
Thinking about college
Looking forward to, and dreading, my own graduation in June
Endlessly annoyed that I don't have my license yet
REALLY wanting summer to be here
Wishing we could hurry up and buy a house to move in to
Blogging
It's not too different, but at the same time it is 100% different. I only have a few months until I am through with high school! It's both scary and exciting. My future lies before me, but I can't see where I'm going. All I can do is hope that it's worth the ride.
What changes have you gone through in the last year? A year goes by so quickly, and so much happens. Life is crazy.

Being Proud
I was so proud of the potholder I made yesterday, that it made me feel like I was five-years-old again! I don't feel proud of things I do very often, no matter what it is. My mom got irritated with me because I barely reacted when I got the financial aid letter from NECI. I don't make a big deal out of my good grades or many of my other accomplishments. I've stopped being proud of myself a lot of the time, and I don't know why.

This is a picture of the potholder. It's made out of an old comfy pair of jeans. The last time I felt so happy was probably on Valentine's Day when I decided to make all those cards for people. I have so much fun creating things! I've started cutting out squares for the quilt. I'll keep working on it, but for now I'm feeling kind of bleh. I'm going to curl up on the couch with a book and a blanket until dinner time, since I'm not cooking dinner tonight. This weeks Joy Rebel Mission is giving yourself permission, and because I know I won't be feeling too great this week I am giving myself permission to not worry about doing tons of chores.
